Tom,
I bought an air powered orbital sander thinking it would be great for boat building but my 9 CFM compressor can't keep up with it. I think that the consumption assumed 50% duty cycle, perhaps even 25%. In retrospect it is probably a little agressive for the task at hand. Stick with a good ROS and change paper often.
Sioux makes an air powered router that lists for $600 and has air consumption of something like 35 CFM!
An air compressor is a wonderful thing to have in your shop. Unfortunately, it will probably have limited use in a kayak project beyond nailing and stapling.
We all need more tools.
