Thanks to everyone with comments & suggestions.

I ended up sanding with 1000 then 1500 (flushing with water continuously), and then polishing with 3M fine polishing compound, and finally using 3M "paint swirl remover, which is very fine.

Now I have a problem....... I can't get a high gloss to the finish! I have tried almost everything to get it back to the original gloss finish, but nothing seems to work.

I have tried: various "fiberglass/gelcoat" polishes, Wax (both pure & with abrasives), Automotive "Polish", spray-on "slick stuff", and when I cut my hand.....blood.

Nothing seems to get the finish close to the original gloss. The wax did the best job, but it is not even close to what I am looking for.

After all of my sweat & tears, I started thinking about the finish I put on. This is the first time I have used a "polyurethane" varnish. Did I pull a boner in trying to polish this stuff? I seem to remember that when I waxed my airplane years ago, I found out that Dupont IMRON (polyurethane) was not meant to be waxed, and wax gave it a slightly hazed finish.

If the Poly is the problem, has anyone ever put "real" varnish over the top? (after stripping off all of the sample spots I have done, and sanding of course).

Hello brain trust....

: I was wondering if there is a means of polishing the final coat of varnish? I
: brushed on the final coat, and there are small surface imperfections
: (Lint?) that keep the surface from being perfectly smooth.

: Maybe color sand? Power buffer with polishing compound?
