I used Minwax water-based stain, after light sanding, and did not seal-coat anything until after all stiched up and ready to glass on my Merganser. With careful sanding and a little touch up with a Q-tip a-la Nick Schade's technique with his S&G Night Heron, everything came out just fine. So far the color is holding up well (one season in the Carolina's).
