This should be an excellent beginners boat. I'm building a Solace 16 LT for my wife so unless you're 6'5" and 350 lbs, this boat should be just fine for you. I assume you've talked to Donnie at Waters Dancing and told him what kind of paddling you intend to do with the boat. He's very knowledgeable and I wouldn't hesitate to take his advice.
According to the directions, the deck will be glassed on the outside, but only have tape applied to the joints on the under side. If I were to do it again, I would completely glass the underside instead of just applying tape, since I think it would be stronger and not weigh any more. If you follow the instructions and take your time, the glassed surfaces will be mirror smooth and completely clear. The glass fabric will be completely hidden in epoxy and you won't see any weave showing through at all.
Good luck - it's a great boat!

: I am planning on buying a Solace 16xl kit and need and am wondering if this
: boat will be an alright beginning paddler boat. Also, I was also wondering
: if they glass the deck at all (inside/outside)and if its recommended. Does
: the glassing take away from the smoothness of the shine.
