So you are talking about an upside down skeg box, open to the sky, to accept the rudder.

A conventional mount would have to sit lower by the width of the rudder.

Does anyone think that is reasonable or not?

I looked at the One Ocean Kayaks rudder and think that it could be modified to do what you talking about here.
