I went the stape-less route on my deck as well (my first kayak), and I used clear packing tape. It's made by the 'Duck' company, and it's really, really strong - about twice the thickness of regular clear packing tape. It was about 1/3rd of the price of duct tape per roll, and each roll had at least an additional 50% of yardage on it.

Just an idea.
