I have a hickory walking stick finished with tung oil that I have used almost every morning for over a decade and the finish is till good. I also finished my Greenland paddle a couple of years ago with oil/varnish mixture that has also held up well so far. And I finished a gunstock with linseed oil that held up. Any of these would be fine I think.
