I recently posted a question on the qajakusa forum, asking how much varnish I'd need for an SOF. One reply I received mentioned that the builder buys polyurethane by the gallon, and immediately pours it into empty (new) one-quart containers, which he said only cost a dollar or so each. Pouring into small containers might be a solution to your oil problem, too.

How long till the oil hardens in the can? I have a quart-size can of tung oil finish, which I am using on a frame and paddle, but I see I will not need to use the whole quart right now.
