This is a perfect opportunity to fix it at the Newfound Rendezvous if you have enough time for the epoxy to cure at the rendezvous. If it’s a hot day, it should cure fast enough.
I’ve done demonstrations on this type of repair at the R2K6 and R2K7.
Here’s how:
Blend out the damage area and taper sand the edges of the fiberglass. You only need about ½” around the edge of the repair to overlap the new fiberglass.
Lay a ziploc bag (the gallon size works great) over the area to be repaired and mark out the perimeter of the patch on the outside of the ziploc using a permanent marker.
Put the number of plies of fiberglass you want to use inside the ziploc bag and orient them the direction you want.
Mix up enough epoxy for the patch in a cup. Open the ziploc and pour the epoxy onto the fiberglass. Save a little epoxy and spread it onto the wood area of the repair to keep the wood from sucking the resin out of the patch.
Close the ziploc and spread the epoxy around the fiberglass patch by using a squeegee on the outside of the ziploc bag.
Using a pair of old scissors, cut out the patch through the ziploc bag. The plastic of the ziploc stabilizes the fiberglass so you can easily cut it into the shape you want. If you didn’t use the plastic the fiberglass cloth would squirm around while cutting it, plus you would have a fiberglass string mess.
You now have a patch that’s sandwiched between two pieces of plastic. Remove the plastic from the side opposite the side you marked with the marker.
Apply the patch onto the kayak and leave the remaining plastic on the patch to minimize future sanding. Lightly squeegee out any air bubbles from under the plastic without removing the epoxy.
When the fiberglass is green, remove the outer layer of plastic.
