Banding in between coats its not to take off runs and drips (well in the practical world it has that purpose too), its for bonding. You could have a perfect coat and wait until its almost dry and put on another coat, the varnish at that point can hold the thickness. But as im told by people that work with varnishes for a living a series of thin coats gives a result that cant be achieved by just a few thick coats. Im afraid that the varnish would act as if it was put on in a thick coat if you go wet on wet.
