Btw, the one thing I think people can get from this conversation is there is no one correct way to get a perfect varnish job. Lots of people with years of experience each have a way that works perfectly for them, might or might not work for you.

Just jump in and give it a try and experiment a little. Even with the worst runs etc. just wait a couple days for the varnish to dry completely you can sand them out then try another way and see if that works better for you :)

Just don't expect that you'll get the absolutely perfect varnish job in a couple days the first time, not likely to happen. Given enough time and patience though I've seen a number of first time builders do a varnish job that rivals professional jobs, just arn't finished quite as quickly.
