My thoughts exactly! and it works in practice too. I cut all the strips for my son's kayak from antique lumber, and after bead and cove my strips measured around 7/8" when cut from finished boards and up to 1" when cut from rough stock. I used one hemlock strip on the shear of both the hull and deck and it would only conform to the shape after trimming to 5/8" while the white pine strips attached to these worked fine. I also tapered a few strips make them conform at the aft stem, and used 5/8" strips at the tighter radius in the bilge. These narrow strips are virtually unnoticeable, and the tapers look way better than the "cheater strip" I needed in the bow.
