Shop: How to replace skeg cable?

Hi,
This isn't exactly building.... I need to replace the kinked skeg cable on my Valley Avocet (plastic). I remember reading somewhere that there are some tricks to getting the cable length right but now I can't find the info and searching the archives here didn't turn it up. Any help would be most appreciated! I am also considering anchoring the cable housing to the side of the hull where it's unsupported between the aft bulkhead and the skeg box. Any thoughts on the idea? Thanks in advance.
