I'd say a canoe is about the same costs as a kayak as you will use approximately the same amount of fiberglass, epoxy and wood. The price of outfitting a kayak can vary greatly if you add a foot pump, commercial hatches, etc. The last canoe I built costs ~$500 to build. A canoe is at least 50% faster to build. However before I had kids, I built a canoe in a month vs. 4-6 months for the kayaks.
