Hell no! My plan to close the biz is to give me time to start writing my book AND to build, build and build more kayaks.
Mostly, I just want to get started with the book. There will be a lot of family history in it. The storyline will follow my big river trip, which will be interwoven with the story about my gggggrandfather, John Peter Pruden. John worked for the Hudson Bay Company back in 1791 (somewhere in that time frame). He started as a clerk/writer at the first Fort Edmonton site. Incidently, the City of Edmonton, Alberta was named in his honor - he was born in Edmonton, Middlesex, England. Anyway, he eventually operated Fort Carlton in North Battleford, Saskatchewan and retired after years as Chief Factor at Fort Garry (near Winnipeg, Man - Mr Ken Sutherland's home town).
John would have helped to build wooden York Boats (see pic of York Boat at the following link: http://thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0008756 ) and paddled them along the North Saskatchewan River. Because he was a writer, he would have kept a log or diary. I plan on getting my hands on those documents in order to build his story. I have already sent an email to the manitoba Archives to try to get access to his records. His story will follow the river as he knew it and mine will follow it as I know it. Everything will be as factual as I can make it. There should be plenty of pictures taken during his era so I should be able to build a great story with good visual representation of both his times and my times.
So that's what I will be doing. I know I will never get rich by writing about such a topic but that doesn't matter - the only thing that matters is that I write and tell a good story.
