Might be a problem with that idea. Using nails and staples the wood fibers are sheared, smashed or just pushed aside--but they atay attached on at least one end. When they are steamed they swell and expand back into (pretty much) the original position.

With S&G you drill out the holes that you stick your wires into. The common practise is to use a 1/8th inch drill bit. All the wood from those holes falls away as sawdust. Steaming would have little effect in closing the holes because the holes are larger than those created by staples, and the material that originally filled the holes is no longer there.

I think your best bet would be to punch your holes with a sharp awl, rather than drill them. Sharpen the awl so you make the smallest hole, and use the thinnest wire you can to stitch the panels together. That may mean something like a 22 gauge steel wire rather than a 16 gauge copper wire. I think the awl-punched hole has a much better chance of swelling shut than one which is drilled.
