Interesting idea, but if your car can have a receiver hitch you could do what I used to do and use a T bar in the receiver to support the rear rack, gives you a long span between the bars. Now days you can get a bike rack, something you might already have, that can be fairly easily modified to do this. When I did this there were no bike racks that were affordable so I had to weld up a T bar. My brother in law still uses it on his Toyota pickup with his w/c canoe.
