Interesting idea. That would be cool if it could be pulled off. You're right about the splitting though, that could be a major issue. I suppose it could be attached to one side of the paddle and maybe wrapped with sinew, and the other side could be made to slip inside of it. This would give the look I'm after like using a scarf joint, but it would be much easier to break down and put back together.
