: . . .For the restoration I was thinking along similar lines. When I first picked
: up the boat ... I thought I would glass the hull. . . Definitely no
: epoxy for this boat! That said I'll probably use a modern poly-urethane
: like Perfection instead of traditional varnish so it's a bit more rugged. . .
You don't need glass, but I'm a big fan of epoxy for sealing wood. A single coat makes a great base. Cover that with varnish and you need fewer coats of varnish. The combination lasts better than multiple coats of varnish alone.
I have a kayak frame resting in my back yard. It's been on the ground or in the sun for 10 or 11 years now. The canvas rotted off a few years ago. Parts of the frame were given a single coat of epoxy resin and a coat of varnish. other parts were given two coas of varnish. the difference is very easy to see. those areas coated with the epoxy look like freshly cut wood--bright and shiny. Right next to it you have gray weathered wood which has gotten brittle. Parts which were painted instead of being varnished or epoxied have had the paint crack and flake off.
Once I replace the broken and weakend stringers I'll re-skin the thing with clear vinyl. But that will probably have to wait until I move and have a new workspace.
