If the John you are refering to is John Monroe, his many posting in the past said he wanted to be able to sail in the open stretches and paddle in the tight stuff.
I sail an 8' dinghy and I assure you it's almost useless without oars. You can't drop your dagger or mount your rudder until you have enough water under your keel. And most casual sailors would want to get a hundred feet away from any obsticals before putting their sail up. When the wind grabs your sail you are off to the races whether you are in control or not.
Anybody who sails a boat without guaranteeing an alternate method of getting back should things go wrong is asking for trouble.
