Carbon coamings

A few thoughts on carbon fiber coamings: they might save some weight (you could only compare the two in terms of weihgt if you made two coamings the same size, one of CF and one in wood, cut them off their boats/forms, then weigh them.), they're definitely rugged and the lips are thinner than wood ones. The layers of glass are really there as a core material to separate the carbon layers. Last winter I did build a coaming on a Black Pearl where the riser and rim were formed with wood (red cedar) and then wrapped in carbon fiber. Best of both worlds? Perhaps. I don't think it was as strong as a monolithically cast solid CF/FG coaming. By the way: most of my clients go for carbon coamings just for the neat "gee-whiz" factor.
