Tim,

As you no doubt already know, carbon is expensive and right now it might be a little hard to get exactly what you want. Kevlar is a supreme hassle to work with and probably not necessary anyway in this sort of construction. Low-density woods make for a fairly weak substrate for the laminations so Kevlar's sheer resistence might only be academic. Kevlar would belong on the outside and since it delaminates somewhat easily it's probably best to ignore its potential benefits.

S-glass is tough stuff and it'll definitely do the trick. It has much better sheer resistence than does E glass. I used a 6-ounce S-2 satin weave because its laid-up thickness is about two-thirds that of the 6-ounce plain weave (6 mils versus 10 mils). I did a lot of experimentation to work out a method for getting it laid up without trapping tiny bubbles underneath the tight weave pattern. In the end I still got a bunch of tiny bubbles trapped underneath it. Live and learn. You can get a strong, lightweight layup the 6-ounce twill fabric that's also transparent but you'll have to spend a LARGE amount of time doing it very VERY patiently. Despite the bubbles, I still think it is a viable option. I can share my observations with you if you're interested.

Vacuum bagging is probably feasible but not worth the effort you'd have to invest in making a well-fitting bag.
