In Response To: Carbon coamings (Dan Caouette (CSFW))

: A few thoughts on carbon fiber coamings: they might save some weight (you
: could only compare the two in terms of weihgt if you made two coamings the
: same size, one of CF and one in wood, cut them off their boats/forms, then
: weigh them.), they're definitely rugged and the lips are thinner than wood
: ones. The layers of glass are really there as a core material to separate
: the carbon layers. Last winter I did build a coaming on a Black Pearl
: where the riser and rim were formed with wood (red cedar) and then wrapped
: in carbon fiber. Best of both worlds? Perhaps. I don't think it was as
: strong as a monolithically cast solid CF/FG coaming. By the way: most of
: my clients go for carbon coamings just for the neat "gee-whiz"
: factor.

I used One Ocean's CF coaming technique on my Outer Island. The first one didn't come out well, the second was acceptable though not as pretty as many I've seen online. A few comments:
a. It takes patience and care (I didn't have quite enough of them on hand at the time) to make the cloth weave look nice, to have the lines orient nicely.
b. I used Vaclav's recommended number of layers, but the coaming IS quite thin. I think its plenty strong; I just wonder if it will be hard on my sprayskirts, as they wrap tightly around that thin edge.
c. It softens noticeably in the hot sunlight, and firms up again when cool. I assume and hope that this is fine.
d. It's kind of fun to build.
e. The gee-whiz factor is also fun, though its a somewhat limited set of people who recognize/know/care about CF.
