Agree with Mike, polyester is what you've used and it's just awful smelling (walk into a professional boat builder's shop sometime when they are using it, ok don't ). Epoxy in comparison has almost no smell at all, your parents won't know you've used it unless you tell them (btw, tell them because like most chemical reactions you don't want them or you breathing the fumes until the chemical reaction is complete ie: the epoxy has cured).
