Thanks, Nick. Making more sense now. I'm going to use a constant depth oval shape for ease of build. I'm not that great with a router.

: The last template was shaped to cut about 1/8" outside of the dish
: shape. I used an 1/8" diameter straight bit and cut about 5/16"
: deep. After I cut the slot, I cut the fitting out of the surrounding wood
: leaving a 1/8" wide lip around the fitting. I then sanded the bottom
: to remove sharp edges.

Is this last template also the one that cuts the hole in the deck? If so, was that done just by using a larger diameter template guide?
