: I was placing an order for some hardware from CLC and went ahead and also
: ordered Brian Nystrom's Greenland paddle building book to add to my kayak
: building book collection.
: Brian's book is excellent, and I actually enjoyed reading it cover to cover.
: Every text I've read on Greenland paddle building provides a different layout
: for the carving lines, each of which results in a paddle with a different
: shape. So I thought I throw my layout into the mix:
: Are there any other GP layouts that people have out there?
The one thing I find fascinating is that everyone assumes there is one shape and one shape only for a GP. Has to be diamond shaped and have a spline down each side.
My paddles that I really like have that shape on one side, it's rounded on the other, has a soft shoulder and the blades are widened slightly and the paddle is thus shorter also slightly. Slows the cadence a little, good for these old bones. But everyone around here says it's not a "real" GP. Might look a bit at all the variations of "real" GP's that we have pictures of, kinda a huge range of shapes.
