Phil,
I have built 2 strip boats, the first from a oneoceankayaks design and the second a kayakfoundry design. Oneocean has an excellent workshop manual, and a very good website, not to mention great boats.
I really suggest that you spend time looking carefully at designs before you commit to one. There are a wide variety of boats, not only for sizing but also design intent.
I spent about $500 on WRC planks and $400 for glass and resin for the double. I also used carbon for a rudder and coamings, and spent a bomb on relatively small amounts. I can email the materials sources if you wish. I also looked at paulownia, but could not find it cheaper than the WRC.
Good luck!
Matt in the blue mnts.
