Dave,

I think you should be fine with 3/16" strips for the coaming riser; I don't think there would be a huge difference in strength. I've used both 3/16" and 1/4" and they are both super strong. Then again, I build composite coamings on top of the strip risers. Are you going to build a laminated wooden lip or a composite coaming/lip?
