The real trick in using thinner strips is to build accurately, and not (have to) sand much. 3/16" gives you much less leeway when it comes time to fair it smooth.
I built a super light OI with 3/16" strips, and got into trouble with its flat, flat flat rear deck. In short, it ended up about 1/8" thick, and has given me a ton of trouble. The boat came in at 38 lbs, btw.
Don't get me wrong, my OI has been through the WRINGER since it was built in June 2005, in the record time of just 29 days; and I trust my very life to it in practically any sea. The bad news it that it's pretty much on its last season now, and I'll have to build a new one. The good news is that it's such a SWEET design that I'll have to build a new one.
Thanks again, Jay.
