: OK, after having plans for a year and a half to build a Guillemot, I'm
: finally getting ready to start milling wood. (Restoration of a small
: British car got in the way..) I have two 8' long, 30" wide, 2"
: thick mahogany boards that I've thought about using. Due to the increased
: weight of Mahogany vs cedar, could I use 3/16 thick strips and still have
: enough strength? Should I use 6oz cloth or 4oz?
: Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I stripped the sides on the Disko Bay with honduras mahogany and it is very easy to work with. Yes it's heavier slightly but it's also quite a bit stronger than cedar so you can get by with much thinner wood. Mine were planed to about .20" and that worked fine.
I've got a fair amount of mahogany left from a previous job so I'm not buying more. About 10 years ago had to buy 2000 bd ft. of the stuff (yeah alot).
