carbon fiber effect in deck fittings

Well you could always cut scraps from carbon fiber, wet them out and poke them into the pingpong ball, then trim the excess when the resin is green.

Or do it with spray paint. Lay a piece of window screen over the pingpong ball and spray paint it grey. Move the screen a bit and hit it again with black paint. Or maybe you have to do the colors in the reverse order. Practice a bit and see how it works. You should get a pattern that looks a bit like the carbon fiber weave. Enough to fool the eye from a small distance.

Or just paint it black and let it go at that. Since it is recessed and in its own shadow I don't think anyone would really notice real carbon fiber texture anyhow.
