In my experience, the thing the main reason people do not like GP's is the lack of training in technique. If you try to use it like a Euro paddle, you will not like it.
As far as I can tell, there is only one absolute in GP construction. The blade needs to be comfortable for extended paddle work. Loom shapes, loom widths, paddle lengths, section thicknesses - all that stuff has a starting point for construction, but it all is personal preference. The objective is to make a paddle that has a clean catch (does not drag air into the water with each stroke) for you and is not so big or heavy that it tires you out, and if important, has the right bouyancy for rolling.
