: Ok, and then about the "lousy" performers.

;-) Re-reading your post, what you say makes a lot of sense. What I paddle now (http://members.cox.net/aling13/kayak/build/fall_2005/kayak_project_2.htm) is 19' long and is fast, it is not a pure bred racing kayak but really shines at going upwind cutting through the waves and doing straight surf landings. Its main problem (zero rocker) is that it won't turn. Practically not at all. Also, it is not great in quartering waves. Too much emphasis on speed. The stern has too little of an angle, this was to lengthen the waterline.

: Btw. Your kayak looks quite interesting. The chine form especially. I guess
: you are looking for high initial stability, ease of paddling and low
: secondary stability. Interesting look in any case.

The rocker in my new model (http://members.cox.net/aling13/kayak/build/fall_2007/kayak_project_3.htm) was added to eliminate those problems. Too much though, I will reduce it. You are correct that the chine/keel line is inconventional. I like it because it creates the wave cutting ability and minimizes splash and wake. It also generates oohs an aahs from bypassers at the beach. I think I will stick with it but reduce the rocker a bit. The sharper bow and stern should help with turning and reducing the impact of quartering waves. I expect a modest speed penalty but as you said, this may be a good thing because sea kayaking is not at all about flat water speed.

Regarding the stability, if my current model is any indication of the next (t was derived off it), the secondary should be better than the primary. With my current yak it is slightly better but really you have to keep moving to feel comfortable. The new one will have a lower CG and I expect the forward and rear volume to add extra secondary stability as a result of the added rocker in combination with that.
