I just did the math on that and equal weight to 1/4"wrc would be strips of .14375 (I'll leave the rounding to you) thick or 3.65 mm. I have seen very rigid layups of cloth/core/cloth laminates at less thickness so the big question is workability of the wood. You can always selectively reinforce ends, bottom, and coaming areas. Everything has limits and the game is to know those limits and stay within them.
