Hi Tom,
I got the opposite impression. The extra effort applied is assymetrical. With an previously injured shoulder, the automatic response is to ease off a bit on that side, adding effort/stress to that side tends to increase the ease-off, negating any presumed benefit to feathered blades in this case.

Having been through injury and therapy for my shoulder before, the only good way to get back the structural strength properly is to work up the bad side slowly, then do balanced work-outs.
Don't kayak to build up an injured shoulder. It will just make it worse.

If you want to know the problems with assymetrical paddling, look up the rate of shoulder injury among dragon-boat racers. It's well above the average for paddlers.
