The common claim that switching to 220 volts increases the torque or horsepower of a motor is false. What it will do is reduce the likelihood of tripping a circuit breaker (common on startup if you have 15Amp circuits), since when you double the voltage, you cut the amperage draw in half. I converted my 1.5HP/110V saw to 220V for exactly that reason. It cuts the same, but doesn't pop circuit breakers anymore.
