I realize that you are probably more comfortable with stitch and glue construction because that is what you have experience with. I do think that you will find more canoe designs suitable for 4 people and a significant about of gear if you consider strip-built canoes also.
You probably already have at least half of the specialized skills you need for a strip-built boat from your stitch and glue experience.
