: Fred,

: What about cutting a kerf in the blade of the paddle along the crack and then
: painting the exposed new wood with unthickened epoxy then filling the kerf
: with thickened epoxy. If you thicken with wood flour you might be able to
: match the wood quite well and if the repair doesn't match perfectly don't
: worry about it you will only see the repair 50% of the time... the rest of
: the time it will be in the water, with only the good blade exposed :D

: Ken

The oil will not have penetrated very deep at all.

Ken has the right idea you just need to take it further.

It is very hard to achieve a full strength bond by trying to force
glue into a crack.

Cut a slot where the crack is to insert a new piece of wood.
The wider the better. This will allow you to apply resin evenly
to the surfaces, insert the new piece and clamp for maximum strength.

Make your defect into a design feature! Use contrasting wood to make it
stand out. Apply a veneer over it that looks like breaching whales.
