I made this statement before, My in-law was a rep for a competitive surf ski manufacturer, all the surf ski he paddled, very hard in the Northwest, were trash after a few years, stress cracking. He said they are a blast to race but like all racing things it is always a trade off, be careful. You can race a 14lb bike but they are trash after a year but a 19lb bike will last a long time if you are careful, but at least you can walk home. I was pro sailer for a few years in the 70's and we knew a 24' ultra light sailboat that imploded off the California coast in a storm when it surfed into the back side big roller, one died on the life raft at night. Racing has risks but thru testing and knowlegde you can try to control them.
