All good points. I'm not trying to go outside existing design norms - but there are already widely spaced existing design norms and I'm trying to decide where in the middle to fall!

Your prototyping suggestion is a good one which I'd been vaguely thinking about already. The challenge I suppose is that I suspect the differences in performance will not be massive, and I'd have to try prototypes out in quite a few different condition before I'd settle on one. That would be great fun - but I don't get to paddle as often as I'd like, so would take a while.

Since I've already got one kayak which is quite V'd, at the moment I'm leaning towards going for quite a flat bottom with V only kicking in quite near the ends, deliberately to be significantly different as an experiment.

I'm still interested in views on expeceted performance differences though - if someone's already done that experiment I'd be keen to learn from them!

cheers,

dave

Why I wouldn't want a flat bottom.
