I'm building a Guillemot Play with western red cedar. The hull is stripped and the deck is just about done. Best I can tell it's time to start thinking aobut the cockpit. For a very simple (?) solution I'm planning to use 1/4 inch plywood, built up to form the coaming and lip around the top. Basically stack the patterns about an inch and a half high in roughly the shape of the coaming I want. The rough plywood would be routered and sanded from there. I'm thinking I would build it clamped to the deck to make sure the shape is right but not glued to the deck until after it's shaped and glassed. Am I on the right track with this or headed for trouble? There wouldn't be any recess so the plywood would simply go on top of the stripped deck. It should be a real simple design and I think the plywood laminations would look good. Any thoughts?
