Last night I took off the strapping tape that I was using to hold the deck and the hull together of my Night Heron greenland kayak. the procedure is the same as discussed in Nick Shades book.
I have marks showing where the tape was. I can't feel any residue and am perplexed by it. I tried using mineral spirits and denatured alcohol but this did not seem to resolve the problem. I wet sanded with 1000 and then 400 grit just to see if it would come off and this seemed to help. As the boat dried the marks went away completely. I then tried putting a thin coating of epoxy on a test spot and it seemed as if the marks disappeared.
this morning however, I noticed that one of the marks was still faintly there even with the thin coat of epoxy.
The only difference that I can see is that the surface is sanded. Normally I guess you would join the hull and deck together after applying fill coats and the surface would be (under magnification) smooth due to the epoxy. I had some issues with drips and roller marks so I sanded down the boat and I am wondering if since the surface is now scratched (under magnification) that there is tape residue in the microscopic scratches.
I would appreciate any input or suggestions before taking the belt sander to the boat.
