: Hi John,
: I think the phrase is free-surface, the amount of space without any
: interuption. A flat-bottomed canoe could have a considerable amount of
: free-surface compared to a similar shaped kayak. Also, in a kayak, the
: kayakers legs act as baffles in lateral water movement.
: Of course, a spraydeck would minimise any water ingress, and in a canoe, a
: bailer scoop does help.

: I still prefer a kayak, or boat, that has some vee or keel effect. I have
: gone for an accidental swim from a flat-bottomed punt when it literally
: slid out form under me. I was standing at the time. That learned me. :)
: Another good reason to always wear a PFD in a boat or kayak.

Hi Mike,

Yes, even a flat bottom kayak would be safer with it's spray skirt, water pump, and legs for baffles then an open flat bottom boat but it's still better to have all the safety you can built into your boat and working for you. The unexpected loosing of a hatch lid or making a wet re-entry in conditions that cause water to inter the kayak would make a flat bottom kayak more unstable and dangerous then a v or round in my opinion.
