Try acetone

I've used alcohol and lacquer thinner but now I just resort to acetone. I've read on this board where acetone leaves a residue but I have never encountered that.

You said that you already sanded the area. You can also try wet sanding with a very fine 500- 600 grit with alcohol. Something will work - don't get out the belt sander.
