No doubt there are many people building wood kayaks for sale, and no doubt that it's probably a dream for many more, but then again, what business doesn't already have many established businesses to compete against. To me that isn't the problem. To me that kind of competition is a fun part of any business. It makes the successes better and it makes the failures valiant.

Times may be getting tough, although I'm not sure I believe that they will end up as bad as the doom and gloom predictions that I've heard lately (especially after Hillary wins and fixes the problems. :) ) Hard times may make it even harder to succeed, but who said business was easy? No one. All I'm saying is that it has been done, it can be done, and it will continue to be done. Heck, I made money doing it last year even though I have no desire to turn another hobby into a business. If someone wants to give it a go and they have a solid business plan, I encourage them to take the risk. Life is meaningless without risk and then we die. Rewards and losses from taking risk give life a meaning and then we die. Why not take risks in the areas that we love to spend our time in. And if that is kayak building for someone, more power to her or him. Dreams are good to have even if they don't materialize exactly as hoped.
