: No doubt there are many people building wood kayaks for sale, and no doubt
: that it's probably a dream for many more, but then again, what business
: doesn't already have many established businesses to compete against. To me
: that isn't the problem. To me that kind of competition is a fun part of
: any business. It makes the successes better and it makes the failures
: valiant.
: Times may be getting tough, although I'm not sure I believe that they will
: end up as bad as the doom and gloom predictions that I've heard lately
: (especially after Hillary wins and fixes the problems. ) Hard times may
: make it even harder to succeed, but who said business was easy? No one.
: All I'm saying is that it has been done, it can be done, and it will
: continue to be done. Heck, I made money doing it last year even though I
: have no desire to turn another hobby into a business. If someone wants to
: give it a go and they have a solid business plan, I encourage them to take
: the risk. Life is meaningless without risk and then we die. Rewards and
: losses from taking risk give life a meaning and then we die. Why not take
: risks in the areas that we love to spend our time in. And if that is kayak
: building for someone, more power to her or him. Dreams are good to have
: even if they don't materialize exactly as hoped.
: Rutabaga's?
Btw, I also have the theory that this is cyclical. We've started a whole new group of kayakers in cheap plastic boats and gradually over a period of years a certain percentage of them will graduate to glass boats. Just how long that cycle lasts is the question, specially if you're stocking a pile of glass boats that arn't selling
