First, by reading Winters - and it's not a conclusion on my part, it's tank tested Naval Engineering.

John Winters, from a post on PaddleWise (part of a great larger discussion on hull forms, etc.):

"This surprises most people who look upon the waterline shape as cutting through the water and the water being pushed to the side. The water actually dives under the boat and travels roughly along the buttock lines. If you can get hold of Taylor's "Speed and Power of Ships" you can see some fascinating drawings of the water flow around a wide variety of hull forms."

PS - Note that the first edition of Taylors book was published nearly a century ago - so this isn't new info, just new to most kayakers maybe.
