Say you have a 17 ft kayak with a 2 foot overhang. The point of the keel is 24" back from the tip of the deck. At the point of 24" back from the tip, you have flare which gives buoyancy and a certain amount of wave/spray deflection and lift. Now you take a saw and cut off the 24" of overhang and pinch that end together. You no longer have any flare at that point. The flare now develops further back.

There's a lot of pro and con over how much over hang and none. Epic who builds racing type of hulls uses a blunt end. They also have created some of the ugliest kayaks in the world. 90% of the Sea Kayaking hulls use an overhang and most now days are designed by computer models.

I once read that some of the Greenland boats also used the ends as a carrying handle as we often now do.

There was a link on bow shapes about 6 months ago by a Naval Architect teacher and many models of battle ships where cited and what the effects of each were. All I remember was that there was no one solution that was best and each move you made in design had ramifications with the weight capacity, forward buoyancy, wave handling, speed on and on. It was very complicated.
