I tried it with standard wet/dry paper and it worked fine but the paper wore a bit too fast for my taste. If I were to try it again I'd opt for the high tech PSA films rather than standard wet/dry paper ... and marble instead of glass. The PSA films will truely give ya scarry sharp. OTOH ... the sharper ya want it the more time ya have to spend. I use a Brian Burns jig with a 1000 diamand plate and jump directly to a 12000 water stone and then to chromium oxide and boron compounds if I get picky. I go the full route when flattening backs and the initial edge ... bit I don't wanna spend the time for edge touch-ups so I stop at the 1000 or after a couple of swipes on the 12000. If ya wanna workout ... try sharpening hard laminated steel 1 inch wide Japanese chisels with waterstones through 12000 ... really sucks!
