It looks like Rich sewed on a cloth skin, as opposed to the vinyl, which likely makes the bow a bit easier to cover.
The cleanest method of dealing with a baidarka bow that I've seen is another Nikumi, by Niels Ginge (below). He didn't skin the bow, its added on after skinning! Since the slit in the bow creates this sort of shape on its own, this method really doesn't alter the bow too much.
